I've got this "pet peeve".... I absolutely hate when people exaggerate what they know.
In fact, I believe God Himself has a problem with this common trait found in humanity. If you study the life of Job, a far better person than myself, Job thought he knew some things about God. He ended up realizing that he didn't know nearly as much as he thought or said he knew.
Job 42:3 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.
One of the essential steps in maturity is realizing you don't know nearly as much as you think you know. Children always think they know everything. In fact, just ask one. See what they tell you.
Okay.... back to the Hurricane
When I hear people, even the President, say that Irma is the largest Hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic.... I just want to scream.
Do you realize we have essential no historical data for Hurricanes much older than 100 years? I mean geesh...... planes didn't even exist to fly into the storms with measure devices to record speed and barometric pressure....
So we have the nerve to claim we really know something when we only have a very small sample of data to justify such claims?
What arrogant mumbo jumbo....

Ha, Ha. I actually understand the intent of your post, but in reality, the statement is true. The key is in the words "ever recorded". LOL
Having said that, I ask for prayers, because I live on the east coast of Central Florida, on the peninsula side of where our barrier islands jut out into the Atlantic (the triangle). It's really too soon to tell for sure what impacts my city will face, but we are in the "cone of uncertainty". We are boarding up and have made plans to evacuate on Saturday if things don't vastly improve. I'm praying for an end to the western movement, a sharp north turn, and an eastern track back out to sea.

I realize they say "ever recorded" but even then, they arrogantly assume modern records are the only stats compiled. Who knows what ancient peoples knew BEFORE we built this "advanced culture" we marvel at.... Ancient knowledge has long been lost to history. Many advanced cultures have existed on this earth and we have very little left of them to judge.

there is another kind of arrogance related to this hurricane that is really starting to bother me... ... the actions and comments of the news reporters on the ground... ..... have you seen them?........ ...i hate to keep talking trash about the news media but these guys have got to be the epitome of both arrogance and stupidity.... ... they are standing right in the middle of the mandatory storm evacuation areas.... in the middle of streets in most cases ..... wearing their baseball hats and rain soaked windbreakers - yammering away with microphones in their hands talking about how stupid other people are who refused to evacuate those same areas and flee from the storm... ....one guy even commented on the stupidity of a driver who was driving his car down a partially flooded street to higher ground...as he begrudgingly moved aside from the middle of the street so the car could get by...... .. ... in addition to the usual attitudes of elitism they normally display they are also acting as if they think their press credentials will somehow be respected by a category 5 storm - much in the same way police and u.s. security officals are bullied into respecting those credentials and forced to allow them to go walking into the midst of cleared areas and war zones yammering away on the mirocphones then too as if their press badge is some kind of golden ticket or magic armor... ......
but what is worse is the bad example they set for others who see them out there and decide that if it;s safe for the news reporters to be standing in the middle of a flooded street with little more than a rainjacket on then surely it;s safe for them to remain in town secure in their home or even drive on those streets with their windows rolled up......... .... in the past they have done the same thing here during tsunami alerts ..(and occasionally still do even after what they saw happened in japan).... standing on or near the beaches as the zero moment approaches - when scientists forcast that a wall of water travelling in excess of 200 miles per hour could possibly hit the beach... all te while yammering away about how silly other residents of the island are that did not go to high ground as directed.... i have even heard them say they are prepared to run if they see it coming.... totally ignoring the advice of experts who say if you are on the beach when you see it coming then it;s already too late..
just one more example in my opinion of how stupid and out of touch with reality the u.s. news media has become............ one day a sizeable tsunami will actually hit honolulu.... and when it does i predict a whole lot of jobs will suddenly open up for on the street news reporters..... .. .but hey.... the live coverage will be awesome.... provided you are safely tucked away in a house on high ground watching it..... ...
I agree with you, aleshanee. I've never understood the "wisdom" of sending weather reporters into the storm. It's not enough to just tell us about it? Goodness!
We survived Irma with minimal damage, and none to the 2 homes on my property. The electricity is out, but we have a generator. Others in our state were not so blessed. Lots of property damage, but thank God, minimal loss of life has been reported.
What I find amazing is that even though Irma traveled the length of our state, it is still packing 60 MPH winds. As of 2 pm, it was on the FL/GA line as a mid-level tropical storm.

The arrogance of man is exceeded only by his ignorance, though sometimes it can be hard to tell which of those attributes he favors most.
Each new generation grows up thinking it's the smartest one that has ever lived.
And sadly, they usually don't accept the fact they are not until they are too old, and it's too late to do anything about it.
