I currently have registration set to require my approval before accounts are activated. I will notify the forum if/when I've changed the setting.

I would recommend not changing the setting.  It's not to keep out anyone in particular, but instant registration invites spammers, and you'll have your hands full deleting ads for erectile dysfunction, hot babes in your area, and how to make $100,000 per month with just a few hours per day on the Internet.  

On the other hand, "captcha" might be good enough to keep most spammers out.

The captcha is pretty good on mybb. Looks better than SMF. There are some spamming features I haven't turned on yet, but it basically is an IP reputation feature. 

I get the registration request in my email so I can activate them quickly.... Unless I'm asleep.

I did chuckle at the question 1600 + 11.

I've enabled self registration with only email confirmation needed. I'll see how that goes....
