  Should you do Ubuntu?
  
  
  I paid a computer shop $16.50 to put Linux on a flash drive for me. It ran well on my Windows desktop computer, but everything I downloaded and installed disappeared when I turned it off. So yesterday, I installed Ubuntu ( a popular brand of Linux that is easy to use).
  
  
  It fouled up my partitions, and I had a hard time figuring out how to get back into Windows later. But I got that straightened out, and then began figuring out this anew operating system.
  
  
  I had to go to on online forum to figure out how to launch programs. They explained that I had to go to “The Launcher,” rather than the icon, to launch the program. The launcher does not list all your programs, even if you type them into the search bar. But I got a lot of them going.
  
  
  The Linux store has loads of free programs, but most of them are for developing new Linux programs. I could not find a program for monitoring the temperature of my CPU, but I found a few good games.
  
  
  It kept losing my internet connection, even though the other computers in my house were still online. It wanted to upgrade to the newest version of Linux, but then told me that I was missing a necessary file.

  One of the problems with installing Ubuntu and Windows 10 on the same machine is that there are two different types of BIOS now.  There's legacy, and there's UEFI.  When you install Windows 8 or Windows 10, it might default to legacy -- it depends on how your BIOS is set up and I think an installation step.  
  
  Even if you install Windows for UEFI, if your BIOS is set to accept either UEFI or legacy, then you'll have problems installing Ubuntu.  Ubuntu will default to legacy, and that will make it very difficult to create a dual-boot system.  UEFI and legacy boot loaders don't coexist well. 
  
  The best approach (strictly in my opinion) is to set your BIOS to use UEFI ONLY, no legacy.  If Windows was installed with legacy, then you'll have to reinstall Windows, which is a major pain, so I don't recommend changing the BIOS at that point.  
  
  But if Windows was installed for UEFI, then you're good to go.  Just set the BIOS to use ONLY UEFI, and then install Ubuntu.  Now it will create a dual-boot system automatically that works.  
  
  How do you know if Windows is using UEFI?   Press Windows+R and type the command msinfo32.  You'll see a window with a bunch of information about your system.  It should say BIOS Mode, and then tell you what it's using.  Mine says UEFI because I set my BIOS to use UEFI Only.

  Linux mint with the cinnamon desktop is the most windows like Linux distribution to me. 
  
  The wifi issues you're having is common with newer Linux distributions and older hardware. The newer kernel dropped many legacy drivers and incorporated different code in the kernel that just doesn't works as well. You really have to do your research to match a wifi adapter to a Linux distribution. Or buy a new one that has Linux module support. 
  
  In my opinion, a Linux and windows dual boot is best to build by loading Linux first and plain on laying out the proper partitions and free space for Windows. Anytime you have to resize partitions and move data... there's a chance for problems. Just my penny.

  Okay, I'm solving the problems one by one, and I'm posting from "Wiley Werewolf, " which is the second-newest Ubuntu distribution. Essentially, Ubuntu fits better on certain computers than on others. A game I like keeps locking up. If I can get the upgrades for Wiley Werewolf, I might be able to upgrade to the newest version of Ubuntu.
  
  Part of my problem is that other than geeking around and playing a few games, Ubuntu has nothing that I need. It goes on the web fine, but so do Windows and Chrome. I can do serious work, but I can do that on other systems. The poorly-equipped Bible programs cannot compare to what Windows has.
  
  I'm actually enjoying learning the system, which has a higher learning curve than Windows 10. I could have done more with it when it was on the flash drive if I had understood the OS better. The more I learn, the more I enjoy Linux, and I might wind up liking it.
