Lets face it. We are creatures of habit. Nostalgia is often our lazy attempt at trying to make sense of human life.
In the Scriptures, there are so many nostalgic examples of how "tradition" got in the way of the Truth. Jesus talked of "vain traditions"...or "empty traditions". Jesus even warned that "vain traditions" had negated the Word of God or made it "no effect."
The same is true today. I just read through a rather long defense of "dressing up" to give God "our best" when we go to "his house" to meet "Him".
Which is entirely nothing more than silly nostalgic vain tradition of yesteryear. Not that I believe we should be guilt of wearing "lustful attire".
I can prove that such things are nothing more than hypocritical nonsense with a few question/points to consider.
1. IF you "dress up" to show respect when you go to meet God, do you do the same thing in your private devotions? or when you pray to God alone? If not, then why not?
2. If you don't do so EVERY TIME you meet with God, then you must be doing it for some OTHER reason.
3. Jesus said that we are "NAKED" before Him.
Heb 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
I realize this is a metaphorical expression but it certainly does tell us what God "sees" about us. Obviously what we wear isn't important to God.
4. If "dressing up" is showing God respect and giving God our best? Then we are relying upon the work of others to impress God. I don't know anyone that makes their own clothes anymore. So its not the work of your own hands you're bringing to God.
5. I've seen a few people appeal to Jesus wearing a "seamless robe" as sign of Jesus desiring to please God with what He wore.
Which is down right silly. These same people wouldn't want people coming into their assembly wearing a seamless robe like Jesus wore. They'd be ashamed to see Jesus come to their church wearing what Jesus wore in his advent.
What I've said above didn't come from some pastor somewhere. It didn't come from minister "plowing" my field. It came from mediating upon the Scriptures and seeking God for myself. Which is what everyone should do. Seek God. You can't blindly accept the words of others. Don't blindly accept mine.
Seek God yourself. I've found that one of the greatest gifts God has given us is that HE is CONTINUALLY with US. What impresses Him is US being CONTINUALLY with Him. Walking in agreement. -

Yeah its a reoccuring nightmare....
I personally don't care what other's generally wear. However, I must admit, the idea that there some how a spiritual reason for dressing a certain way to meet God is difficult to tolerate.
Not that "church/assembly" is actually where we're suppose to meet with God. Its not.
Ultimately this modern age is so far removed from the Truth of Jesus Christ that it is difficult to have a conversation about the Truth. Everyone has their own flavor of it and its all generally about them. -

it;s not a big issue at my church... ....in fact it;s not an issue at all.... ....nobody cares whether you dress up or dress down when you come to church.... .. the important thing is that you are there.... .. but that being said.. ... i do tend to dress better when i attend church than when i am just out and about doing other things..... ....it;s a personal choice i believe i should not have to defend..... . and i don;t expect others who might dress differently to defend their choices of church apparel to me either... ..they have their reasons for wearing what they do.. and i have mine.. ...and my reason has nothing to do with nostalgia or thinking i can impress God ..
and..... if we are in church for the right reasons.. .. and if we ourselves have a proper view of Jesus... then none of us should be bothered or concerned by what other people wear to church anyway... ...whether they appear to be dressing up... or dressing down..... it should not matter to us... period....... ...
but the thing i am concerned with... and sometimes bothered by.... is whether or not the person sitting next to me took a bath before coming to church..... and whether or not they understood that right guard goes under the left arm too... ..... if they did... and do..... then i will be none the wiser and won;t even think of it........ .... but if they didn;t.....
... and i am down wind of them..........
. .......or if it;s a hot humid day.......(my church has no air conditioning)... ... ............ ....... well.......... you get the idea.......
