1. Pride......
The more we do things the same way, the more we fall in love with our own ways.
It doesn't matter if we've been wrong for 40 years...... If we are wrong. We are wrong. I've had people tell me they couldn't possibly change NOW... Too much time. Too much effort. Too much "water under the bridge" to be different.
I try to take the approach that I could be wrong. Even when I think I'm right.... I try to always consider the fact that I might be wrong.
If I'm wrong.... I try to change. I admit..... I'm not always successful.
That is why we must not have an exaggerated opinion of ourselves. It is so vitally important for us to see ourselves exact as we are. -

pride definitely causes people to resist changing.... . ... but so does fear..... ... in fact sometimes people who otherwise have nothing to be proud of.... and who claim to hate their life and are always complaining about it.... will sometimes resist change simply because they fear what might come next...... .....or... as they say.... fear things could actually get worse.....
and then sometimes people simply fear that which is different and don;t really know the reasons why.... ..it;s the unknown.... ... like on the old world maps with sections that were marked .."beyond here there be monsters"..... ....i guess to them a life of familiar misery is better than risking a torturous apocalypse.....

but then again.... .... it would also be fair to ask what kind of change you are talking about.... ....not all change should be desirable.... ... and in some cases change could actually be detrimental or dangerous .. .....change just for the sake of it is foolish.... unless a person knows what they hope to gain or improve by making a change, then venturing out on a mission to abolish the old and bring in the new can be a risk not worth taking in the end... ..and that;s if we have only ourselves to think about... ...
when others depend on us in one way or another, making a change without talking into consideration how our changes will affect them are reckless at best... even callous.... ...and just because we might come to believe we have been wrong for 40 years.... that doesn;t mean we really have been.... .. and certainly not in every way.. ... for a person to survive for 40 years while being wrong means he was doing something right... .. even if it was a small something... ..either way.... being wrong... and i mean really wrong... generally makes survival impossible.... ...
but anyway.... you get the idea.... ..it;s seldom a simple answer......
